The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is one of my children's favorite fall books. Actually, it's a year-round favorite!
Being square, Spookley is obviously different from the other pumpkins in the patch. He is often teased by the other pumpkins, until a terrible storm comes and Spookley saves the day. This sweet book sends a beautiful message of love and acceptance in the face of diversity. In fact, it goes beyond acceptance, to joyfully celebrating the beauty of that diversity. What an incredible message!
Not only does my family adore this sweet story, but I am excited to share that Spookley the Square Pumpkin is once again the official "Spokes Pumpkin" of National Bullying Prevention Month, which takes place each October. It breaks my heart to think of children and teens out there being bullied by their peers. My hope and prayer is that each of those children will know that they are loved and have someone who cares and will stand up for them. And maybe this sweet story will help our younger children understand love and acceptance, and STOP BULLYING BEFORE IT STARTS for their generation!
