Peanut Butter Alternative - Elephants

Bento Blog Network's meme this week is "Peanut Butter Alternative".  Because Super Tot is allergic to peanuts, I guess you could say all of our bentos are peanut butter alternatives.  However, this elephant bento has a distinct substitute to a traditional PBJ.

Holiday Ho Ho Hop!

Welcome to Bento Bloggers & Friends Holiday Ho Ho Hop! This is the first of 3 weeks of Holiday hops, so be sure to follow along all month!  There will be different participants each week, so you are sure to see lots of variety, creativity and amazing food art!

I have many Christmas theme bentos planned for this month, so deciding on one to make for this blog hop took some thought.  As many of you know, my little Super Tot has severe food allergies to peanuts and several tree nuts.  Finding safe treats can be a bit of a challenge.  Last year, my sister surprised us with a visit at Christmastime (she lives 1/2 way across the country), and she brought along a special gingerbread cookie for Super Tot.  It was in a little tin with the following Allergen Statement on the back: "Made in a peanut and nut free facility."  He loved the cute little cookie and was so excited that it was safe for him to eat.  We were not able to find more of them last year, but last week on a trip to my local grocery store, I FOUND THEM!!!  I purchased several and Super Tot was thrilled.

In honor of our favorite holiday treat - and Super Tot's allergies - I decided to make a Gingerbread Man Bento.
What's in the box??
Gingerbread Men - Panko covered Rice w/ Cheese, Nori, Bell Pepper & Cilantro accents
Lettuce Bed, Broccoli, Tomatoes, Carrots, Bell Pepper, Celery
Cheese "Snow-topped" Trees, Apple Stars, Kohlrabi Snowflakes

Picnic Under an Apple Tree

Today's bento was inspired by a recent trip to the grocery store.  There were so many apples!!  They had to more than double the size of our organic produce section just to accommodate them!  I delightfully chose several varieties, as I dreamed of the lovely orchards from which they were hand-picked.  My daydreaming led to thoughts of having a picnic under one of those trees...thus leading to this bento!!

Vegan Ladybug Bento

The challenge this week at Bento Blog Network was to do a totally vegan bento.  Our family isn't vegan, but I was up for the challenge.  I went back through all my old bentos, and realized that I didn't have a single one that didn't contain either meat, cheese or eggs (or all of them).  Wow...

Here is what I came up with today without using any of those ingredients.

Vegan Ladybugs
 What's in the box??
Ladybugs - Red Plums w/ Tomato, Nori & Pasta Accents
Lettuce Bed
Squash Flowers, Bell Peppers, Carrots, Snap Peas, Tomatoes
Black Beans, Garbanzo Beans

UPDATE:  Looking again, I actually found one other vegan bento that I have done.  It was a giraffe bento you can see here.

Hedgehog Bento

I find hedgehogs simply adorable, so I hope I did them justice with this bento!  I was inspired by an e-mail my mom sent me yesterday containing a photo of a hedgehog.  When I saw the picture, I recalled a bento I saw many months ago and knew I wanted to make this one today.  It was very simple, but a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed making it.

Buzzy Bumble Bee Bento

Both of my kiddos asked to have tuna sandwiches for lunch today.  I happily complied, but not without fitting them into a fun bento!  I had the leftover yellow rice from Wednesday's Back to School Bento, so I was initially going to make a sun.  As I was making the face on the sun, I was inspired to change gears and decided to make a big yellow bumble bee, instead.  I used a small piece of the sandwich for the wing, and was thrilled with how it turned out.  The kids agreed that it was way more fun than just having a sandwich on a plate with a side of veggies!

Since tomorrow is Independence Day, I decided to make bald eagle bentos for the kids.  They aren't perfect, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out.

The kids were excited and loved them, too!

Fennec Fox Bento

There is little in life cuter than a fennec fox.  I fell in love with this precious animal the first time I laid eyes on one, and the more I see, the more adorable I think they are. Princess is equally enamored by them, so I decided I would make one for today's bento.  I certainly didn't do God's adorable creation any justice, but the kids enjoyed it.

Bert & Ernie Bento

My original plan today was to do a different bento, but I realized I didn't have one of the necessary items to do that one.  I had already colored my rice, so I was stuck doing something orange.  I also had some leftover yellow rice from yesterday, so I quickly realized I could do Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street!

Nori, Bell Pepper & Pre-made Wilton Eyes
Ernie - Orange Rice (colored with pureed carrots & sesame oil), Tomato Nose, Bell Pepper, Fish Sausage, Nori & Pre-made Wilton Eyes

Giraffe Bento

I honestly didn't know what I was going to do for today's bento.  I wanted to use turmeric in the rice, so I knew it was going to be yellow.  I used a little too much, so I got a very dark yellow.  When I saw the color, two images popped into my head - a school bus and a giraffe.  I thought the giraffe might look cuter with the items I had on hand, so I hand formed one with plastic wrap to see what it would look like.  I was happy with the result, so I stuck with the giraffe!
Giraffe - Rice (dyed with Turmeric) w/ Nori, Enoki Mushroom & Pre-made Wilton Eye

Leftovers can be tricky.  Sometimes, they are perfect for bento boxes, but other times they don't work out so well.  I decided to take a chance and "roll the dice" with some leftovers I had in the refrigerator...

Starbucks Bento

Each week, Bento Blog Network hosts a themed Bento of the Week challenge.  The theme for the challenge that starts tomorrow is "Alternative Boxes."  I was told that any container that was not intended to be used as a bento or lunch box would qualify as alternative.

I started thinking and decided I would use a paper Starbucks bag as my container.  I cut the bag in half and rolled the sides down, then lined the paper bag with a cut open cellophane bag from Christmas.  As I was brainstorming on what to put in the bento, I recalled one of the first items I ever pinned on Pinterest, which was a Starbucks cup bento.  I thought that would be a perfect item to put in a Starbucks bag container!

I failed to plan today's bento before beginning to prepare it.  I had lots of delicious Korean foods to include, but no theme.  As I was placing the Crab Pajeon (Korean Pancake) in the bottom of the bento, I immediately saw an orangutan in my mind.  I decided it would be the perfect addition to our lunch!

It's Not Easy Being Green

I was a bit short on time today after arriving back home from an appt., but I wanted to do something fun.  I started off just doing a plain bento, but spotted the green apples at the last minute and decided to make a couple of Kermit the Frogs.  I had seen one on Pinterest awhile back, and while mine is no where as cute, I think it turned out okay.

Welcome to Bentos on the Bayou!

I have had my Princess and the Tot blog for just over a year and a half.  It is primarily an educational homeschool blog with a few crafts thrown in on occasion.  A couple months ago, I started having a weekly Fun Food Friday post to chronicle the healthy bento lunches I prepare for my children each day.

After much thought and debate, I decided to start a separate blog just for my bentos.  After deciding on a name & theme, I collaborated with Diana at Custom Blog Designs to design Bentos on the Bayou!  Diana was amazing to work with and I encourage you to contact her if you want to start a new blog, or just update one you already have.  She was attentive, quick and very professional.  Her customer service is first class, and she is an absolute delight to work with.
